Throughout the year every Jewish person lived their lives as individuals’ part of families with histories of their own, but at specific times of the year these families would gather as the larger Jewish family to remember a bigger story – the story of their identity as the people of God. The most significant of these times was Passover when they would remember they way the angel of death “passed over” their ancestors as slaves in Egypt and opened the door to their freedom after 400 years in bondage. Jesus and his disciples are gathered in the Upper Room to celebrate this feast of Passover. And when Jesus takes the loaf and the cup, he is saying something profound: “you are now part of a bigger story yet – the plan of God to set the whole world free from sin and death. Every time you eat bread like this, every time you drink from the cup like this, remember me. Remember not only that you’re free from sin and death; remember that you’re now part of the plan that will set others free too.”
